as director of the cia after admitting he an extramarital affair. they confirm to cnn that the investigators have been exploring tips on an affair with paula broadwell, his biographer. they tried to see if there was a potential security risk, in other words to see if petraeus could possibly be black mailed. petraeus is a highly respected, retired four-star general who commanded forces in both iraq and afghanistan. he was sworn in to run the cia a little over a year ago with vice president biden with his wife holly at his side. that was the swearing in. they've been married 35 years, have two grown kids. so how will this revelation exact the u.s. intelligence community? joining me now is fran townsend and bob baer and suzanne kelly. suzanne, what more can you tell us about the probe into the relationship with paula broadwell? do we know how long this has been going on? >> we don't know how long it was going on, but just the -- so they're the ones that would look into accusations of inappropriate access to classified information. individuals that hold clearances, are they doing what they need

've had tonight but you do have very good fbi sources. i want to turn to bob baer. he's the cnn contributcontribut. does this make sense to you that this could be the sequence of events? >> oh, absolutely, but i tend to attribute more significance to the fbi of getting into petraeus' e-mails. the fbi, as a matter of course, doesn't look at affairs, doesn't read military officers' e-mails or cia officers. they have to be alerted to some sort of crime or counterintelligence problem. i can only speculate what that would be. maybe it was something in the book that broadwell wrote. there was some classified information. it could have been other leaks to the press they looked into, and then once they opened a relationship like is, they found the rest of it, and that they're able to get a warrant to continue to read his e-mails or hers, but something sparked this, something that we don't know about so far. >> what started it was a general filtering system not by the fbi but probably by nsa which looks for any abuse or problem with use of government e-mails. >> right. i think the situat

to bring in cnn's wolf blitzer, who is live for us in jerusalem tonight, and anderson cooper and ben wedeman, both in gaza city. wolf, let me start with you if i may. a very tense day with claim and counterclaim coming almost on an hourly basis. there was going to be a cease-fire, then no cease-fire. both sides trading sort of insults and then offering fig leaves. what do you make of it all? as we talk now in the middle of a night there, what do you make of where we really are with this? >> well, throughout most of the day, i thought they were very close to reaching a cease-fire agreement. all the signs looked rather positive. then all of a sudden, on this day, it was getting increasingly more tense in the southern part of israel and what we've been seeing in gaza, very, very bloody as well. you wouldn't know that they are apparently rather close to some sort of a deal, that the egyptian government, the new president, mohammed morsi, seemed to be brokering. they may still get some sort of cease-fire agreement. it looks very tenuous to me right now but you know, sometimes just before,

the world. how long can peace last? i want to go now to cnn's arwa damon, is there a sense of the strength of the position in the last eight or nine days? >> reporter: there is, certainly if you look at the terms because there is a cease-fire agreement. at the very least it does state that israel must open the border crossings to facilitate the movement of people. we don't know what it will translate to at this stage. but from the people we speak to here, they do feel that this time around, the israelis, yes, it was indirectly, but they were forced to come to an agreement via the mediator, versus four years ago. the mood on the street here earlier was one of celebration. some people celebrating the fact that they do view this as being a victory over israel as having stood up in the face of what they describe to be israeli aggression, but finally, they say after days of bombardment, they were able just to go outside. >> yes, you can see the pictures here of people looking jubilant, just getting outside. when you look at how it plays out, mohamed morsi playing a pivotal role here. how is egy

's on a knife edge. the latest cnn poll, 49% each, a dead heat, as things stand. in various swing state, it is different which depending on which poll you read. what happens no one can say with certainty what is going to happen here. a question i put to you, michael why has obama not been able to be further ahead? why is it so close? >> it's combination of things you the obvious ones, you know, the economy could be better right now. there's still a lot of people out of work. we are still in afghanistan. go down the whole list of things. i think honestly, considering the hand he was dealt at the beginning, he has done a good job dealing with the mess that the bush administration handed him. and i think it's this close -- i hate to say this, because i just -- it just -- but i've been out in the midwest and i'm listening to people and stuff, i'm still amazed at how the issue of race comes up in this election, still. somebody was saying earlier, i think it was on cnn, of the -- you know, romney is gonna win the white vote or whatever. and it is just interesting, it is like it almost sounds

,400 palestinians dead. that's why so many are fearful of the activity on their border. cnn's sara sidner covering the conflict from inside gaza. >> reporter: today we've been hearing a chorus of drones overhead and a symphony of air strikes. also seeing plenty of rocket fire coming out of gaza towards israel. we witnessed several times -- several rockets at a time heading over towards israel. right now, we're hearing the sounds of planes. that usually only means one thing, that there will be air strikes that follow. and it's this time of night and into the wee hours of the morning that usually things get very, very intense with lots of blasts of air strikes. but also we know that there have been some blasts coming from the israeli ships in the sea. we ourselves experienced some of the loud booms and bangs that were coming from the sea. we were right on the water there. so a lot of concern. the civilians are not in the streets. most people have hunkered down in their homes. most of the businesses have been closed. we know that more people have been killed here, including militants and civilians. a

interview in a moment. we begin with cnn's arwa damon live in gaza city. arwa, i had a fascinating conversation with president peres earlier. he's still saying that it could go either way but what is your sense on the ground about the likely prospects of a cease-fire and how long will the israelis give it before committing to a possible ground offensive? >> reporter: the likelihood of a cease-fire seems to be increasingly elusive the longer this does drag on, and all through the night, we have been hearing the sound of air strikes, some of them have actually shook the building that we're standing in. we have also been seeing rockets continuously being fired from gaza city, from the center of the city towards israel. not a lot of optimism on the ground here amongst residents of the city who have been through this on so many occasions in the past, that there will be any sort of cease-fire that is going to take effect in the near future, not to mention one that is going to take effect for the long term prospects of enduring peace between these two populations that have been at war for

% of americans according to the cnn poll believe obama and the gop should compromise to get thing off a cliff. we have to give and we see the difference ideologically, but in all kinds of tixie deductions and so on and a flat income tax increase on wealthy americans. what's the ideological difference. wealthier people pay a little more tax. >> it's not a ideological difference. what can raise the money most efficiently and effectively to create economic growth that's going to create jobs for people. one of the things i talked about during the campaign was cutting the corporate tax for manufacturing. you want to create jobs that are here in america that are going to create good-paying jobs that create things that people will consume here in it country. let's do something to get this manufacturing economy revved up and going. it's picked up a little bit with lower energy prices. we can do things in the tax code to create jobs here and get some of that wealth, invest it in manufacturing plants facilities, which are construction jobs and the manufacturing jobs after that. we had something -- we're do
